It is useful to think of memory as a sort of cryptographic protocol to which we humans, on balance, reliably lose the private key. We encrypt our actions and experience as matter and then, from the present, gaze back on an inscrutable past. When we are fortunate enough to remember, we perform fuzzy reconstructions that pale in comparison to the original reality.
